THE ARTIST:
Timothy Daszko
Timothy Daszko, was born and raised in the Bay Area of California. He was born
on the twenty ninth of July 1982, to
Eugene and Marcia Daszko. He has been fortunate to have traveled extensively
around the world, and has thus become very well cultured and educated in the
arts of the world. He studied at the University of California at Santa Cruz,
where he triple majored in Art, History of Art and Visual Culture, and Legal
Studies. While in college he wrote and submitted proposals for sculptures as
well as started his company Daszko Designs. He undertook commission pieces for
clients, during this time. He is currently pursuing a Master's of Arts, and has
completed some course work towards its completion. Timothy hopes to continue art
through-out life and provide an artistic, creative, innovative, and inspiring
impact on the world around him.
ARTIST STATEMENT:
My
work has been a tribute to the abstract thought process that every artist goes
through. Salvador Dali has been one of the most influential artists for me as
far as abstract thought is concerned. A sculpture for me begins simply with an
idea, a shape, or just playing with form. I am primarily an object maker
interested in exploring abstract forms that conjure up the possibility of a
multitude of meanings. My approach to making an object or painting has been to
bring wonder into the world of art and have my abstract pieces open up the
viewer’s imagination. Abstract art, to me, suggests and the viewer naturally
creates his/her own image and meaning from the suggestion. There is obviously
an element of search to this process, and being interested in ambiguity,
I am trying to provoke various or simultaneous associations or references in the
mind of the viewer.
A
real sculptural experience demands physical, active interaction from the point
of making to the point of viewing. When people view my pieces I hope that they
all come away with something different, because it reveals the nature of
abstraction. For me creativity is a journey of exploration, a journey of
discovery, and the end is often far from the starting point. Whether it is a
study of a material, an idea, a scrap on the floor, or a vision, I have the
resources, both technically and educationally, to help me dream, create, and
inspire.
Watching as shapes transform, I look for that special
moment when there is energy in the piece. The
Surrealist
Manifesto
of 1924 described the activity of art as a channel through which one can access
the subconscious.
Andre
Breton
labeled this activity as: "Automatism - purely spontaneous activity by which
images erupt from imagination without interference from logic or reason, and
exempt from any aesthetic or moral concern.” It is with this in mind that I
challenge and expand the boundaries of control, comfort, and tension in y work.
In a series of pieces I tried to deliver that message, among other things, by
balancing a fairly heavy object on a fine point, maybe even its “defining
point”, the only point of contact and the only source of support.
With the resources and new knowledge I acquire through out life I hope to create
art work that appeals not only to the eye but to the mind as well. Working with
the fluidity of glass, metal, and wood and molding that fluidity into the
contrasting or complimenting visions is my passion. I feel the use of different
mediums and the use of their attributes to being cold and warm materials are
blurred and thus utilizing glass, wood, steel, and bronze has inspired
differences in their uses to conjure unique feelings towards the materials.
Using these materials in a multitude of ways enables me to represent feelings of
fluidity, fragility, dangerousness, ambiguity, and so much more.
My goal as an artist has been to
explore the realm of shape and form through the freedom of my imagination and
present my finds in a beautiful yet meaningfully ambiguous art work.
Thank you for your interest,
Timothy Daszko
